Worcestershire Beacon (Malverns) – 3.5 mile circular – June 2013

On the way to Gloucester from the north you can see the Malvern Hills on your right – just a little while after Birmingham. I have wanted to explore this area for a while now, but usually when we’re visiting family in Gloucester it’s all a bit of a rush. However, today we made good progress down the M6 (which is usually horrific on a Friday) so we took a quick detour off the motorway to Great Malvern. It’s about 10 miles from Junction 7 on the M5 and only took about fifteen minutes.

We had a quick look around Great Malvern, mainly so we could buy a map. It is a smashing little spa town but there was no map shop (that we could see). So, as ever, we hit the hills being rather unprepared. Luckily we found our way up to the Worcestershire Beacon which dominates the town, and found there were plenty of paths heading along a thin strip of land, so navigation was easy. It reminded me of Beacon Fell really, as long as you have a reasonable sense of direction it would be pretty hard to get lost.

The weather took a turn for the worse and we were in jeans and t-shirt so we didn’t hang around for too long. And on the way back to the car it brightened up again, which was a bonus as we were dry by the time we got back to the car.

Great Malvern is a smashing little town, worth a visit on its own right, and the Malverns are a great bunch of hills which are well pathed, offering brilliant views of the surrounding countryside. I can see myself having more detours to the Malverns in the future.
