Great Stone of Fourstones

Great Stone of Fourstones

The Great Stone of Fourstones, known also as ‘Big Stone’ and ‘Four Stones’ sits just 10m inside Yorkshire on the Lancashire Boundary, near to the village of High Bentham.

The stone is a very short walk from the road and fifteen steps have been carved so you can walk up to the top.

It is a glacial deposit from the nearby Tatham Fells, and as the name suggests there were three other stones which could have broken up for tools.

An old myth says that the Devil dropped the stone on his way to build Devil’s Brdge at Kirby Lonsdale. There is a great article about the Great Stone of Fourstones here.
