About five miles north of Slaidburn is a gritstone outcrop called Bowland Knotts. It’s not the sort of place you could spend all day, but if you are in the area it is well worth a visit.

It is very easy to go up the wrong road from Slaidburn (Lythe Fell Road), just remember that to get there you have to drive through Gisburn Forest (if heading north). The correct road is good but quite remote (Keasden Road) and is a fantastic drive – with excellent views of the Yorkshire Three Peaks.
